Welcome to the DISC Newsletter of June / July 2010.

Message from the DISC office

In this final DISC newletter before the summer vacation you will find the announcement of the new DISC course programme starting in september. The DISC Info Guides for the new academic year have meanwhile been mailed out to all DISC groups, so soon everybody should have a hard copy available on his/her desk. Note that as of September we have moved the location of the DISC lectures to the buildings of Domstad “Hogeschool”, also in the close neighbourhood of the Utrecht Railway Station. With the growing number of students attending the DISC courses we were forced to move to a location that can accommodate these larger groups.
As you also can read, the Dutch bid for the organizaiton of the IFAC World Congress 2017 in Amsterdam was unfortunately not successful. Despite substantial Dutch support during the recent ACC 2010 (including widespread orange tulips), the town of Toulouse was selected there as the site of IFAC 2017. We may want to try again for the next one in 2020 (…)
Systems and Control and DISC are growing. The number of PhD students listed in the new DISC Info Guide has increased to 180.
Rest to say that we wish all DISC members a relaxing and easy-going summer vacation!
The DISC secretariat will re-open again on August 9.

Best regards
Paul Van den Hof

IFAC 2017

The Dutch Bid for the organization of the 20th IFAC World Congress in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, has unfortunately not been selected by the IFAC Council. During its meeting on Friday 2 July, 3 proposals were evaluated, presented by the delegations of Japan, France and The Netherlands. After a secret vote the French proposal was selected, and as a result the city of Toulouse will be the location of the World Congress in July 2017 with Prof. Janan Zaytoon as prospective IFAC President for the triennium 2014-2017.
We thank all people who have contributed to the Dutch proposal.
Within the Board of DISC we will further discuss whether a renewed proposal will be made for the 2020 version of the Congress.

Supervisor: Raffaella Carloni
Project: AIROBOTS: Innovative aerial service robots for remote inspections by contact

Hello, I am Abeje Yenehun from Ethiopia. As my PhD research, I will be working on the EU project AIRobots in particular on telemanipulation of the aerial service robot under the supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Stefano Stramigioli and Dr. Raffaella Carloni. To say some about my background, I was born in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. I followed my entire elementary and secondary school in Lideta Catholic Cathedral School, one of the most prestigious schools in the country. I followed my bachelor in Electrical Engineering in Mekelle University, Ethiopia. I was able to further excel in academia after I got NUFFIC-HSP scholarship to pursue my MSc. in Control engineering in the University of Twente, The Netherlands. My final thesis was on “Modeling and Control of unmanned Aerial Vehicle: the port Hamiltonian approach”. Apart from academia, I am a big football fan, and sometimes a player too. I like watching movies, reading fictions, playing volley ball, having long walk in the trees and working out.

Supervisor: Ton van den Boom / Bart De Schutter
Project: STW-Project Model-Predictive Railway Traffic Management System.

My name is Nicolas, I will be working under the supervision of Dr. van den Boom and Prof. De Schutter as a PhD-Student on the STW-Project Model-Predictive Railway Traffic Management System. We will work with the Department of Transport and Planning of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences on a framework for closed-loop control of large-scale railway systems. So if everything goes well, we might be able to save you some of those annoying, and sometimes everlasting delays when travelling by train! I was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. After finishing school at the German School of Montevideo I studied Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. About a year ago I arrived to The Netherlands to do my Diploma thesis project at the European Space Research and Technology Centre in Noordwijk. There I worked on the optimality of insect inspired optical flow landing strategies. Swimming, running, cycling, and playing water polo are some of my hobbies, and I hope to join some of you in the Thursday's football matches! I look forward to the upcoming, and challenging years among the DCSC!

Supervisor: Michel Verhaegen
Project: Integrated Smart Microscopy

My name is Han Woong Yoo, and please call me Hans. I am from Seoul, South Korea. My PhD project is "integrated smart microscopy" and is conducted under the supervision of Prof. Michel Verhaegen and Prof. Georg Schitter. I received MSc at Seoul National University in 2007. At that time, I studied model based control and estimation theory for time delay systems. After that, I worked in Samsung Electronics and investigated noise and interference models for semiconductor devices such as NAND flash, SD-ADC, and CMOS RF systems. Based on the models, I developed signal processing algorithms and simulators to enhance their reliability.
I have a keen interest in optimization theory; model based stochastic control and signal processing in various applications such as adaptive optics, semiconductors, systems biology, and robotics. I am really happy to work with you at DCSC and please feel free to contact me.

A central PhD program is provided for PhD students in systems and control. It consists of a course programme offered in Utrecht, international summer schools and a yearly three-day Benelux Meeting. Since its start in 1987 this PhD program has become a cornerstone of the cooperation among the dutch academic community in this field.

Controlling the positioning and motion of objects with high speed and ultra-high precision (up to nanometers) is crucial in storage equipment as dvd’s, hard disk drives, in IC manufacturing and in scientific imaging instruments as AFM’s. Without feedback control this technology would not exist.

Industrial production processes in (petro)chemical, food and energy industry are dependent on appropriate control technology for designing operations that are economically efficient, safe, with optimal usage of resources and minimal environmental load. Model-based control technology provides the tools for achieving this.

Future automotive systems will show vehicles where comfort and driving conditions are highly automated while they are intelligently supervised to keep optimal distance and to optimize route planning. In this development distributed sensing and control is a key technology.

Guidance and navigation of airplanes and spacecrafts highly depends on automatic control systems. This dependency is even more pronounced when steering unmanned vehicles, e.g. for inspection tasks, or controlling (micro) sattelite formations in space. Aerospace applications have been important drivers for developing advanced and robustly operating control systems.
